Find Outlook email files

Post by mister_v »

Hi,

I have to copy my emails from my old PC.
I was using Microsoft Outlook, but I don't know where it is storing the email files.

Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks,
Chris

It depends on what version of Outlook.

Outlook Express saves the files in:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Outlook Express\{GUID}
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Those are *.dbx files

Note: The folders are hidden!
So set explorer so you can see them.

Outlook (2002, 2003 , 2010) saves the emails in *.pst-files.
Windows XP drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
Windows 7 and Windows Vista drive:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

You might also want to copy your Personal Address Book (.pab)
Outlook same folder as *.pst-files

Windows Address Book (.wab) for Outlook Express.
C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\

hopes this helps.

By the way, you should make backups of these files on a regular basis.
*.pst files have a 2GB file limit, before Outlook 2003
20GB limit for Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007
From Outlook 2010 it can be over 50GB.
But such large size is not recommended.

You can't import the outlook .PST or .DBX files in the windows 8 mail-app.

It's not a full email client like outlook,
more like an interface to your mails that are stored on a imap-server. (like hotmail.com, now known as outlook.com )

You can get Outlook by installing Office,
There are also other email clients that allow you to import those .pst-files.
Mozilla thunderbird is one.

I heard of a workaround that allows you to upload the files to you microsoft account (you@outlook.com)
But I have to look it up.

Found the info on the following page:

http://www.msoutlook.info/question/765

In short
  1. You add your hotmail/outlook.com account to outlook-program (http://www.msoutlook.info/question/707)
  2. import the PST-files in the outlook program.
  3. Move your emails to the hotmail/outlook.com imap-account.
Basically thats is, but you might want to check the URL's for more info.
